Guest Post -- "best holiday ever"

E-mail Print
I've just received this long review from Sarah Shreeves and family, spurred into action by our creation of a Facebook group called Saleh and Wadi Rum.  Their verdict:  "For those of you considering a trip to Jordan, I would urge you to book it - don't let unrest in the region put you off.   We had a really wonderful time and our well-travelled children have voted it best holiday ever."

"We travelled to Jordan from the UK for a two week holiday in April 2012 and had a fabulous time. Our group comprised my family of 2 adults and 3 children aged 7, 11 and 13 and our two adult friends.  I had arranged our own itinerary and booked hotels from the UK via email (all very easy) and Tudor had kindly put us in touch with Issa and Saleh. We had a few email conversations with Issa before we arrived and he met us all as planned at the airport.

Who is Issa? and what can he do for you?

The simple answer, with a photograph, is in the left-hand column; so more or less whatever you want in Jordan. Beyond that he's a good friend of ours, who's embraced our crazy philosophy that everyone who comes to Jordan should have a fantastic time and become tourism ambassadors for the country. A bit like Saleh in Wadi Rum.

We all like working with visitors who want to get to know the country and its people better. Often they are a bit more adventurous, travelling more independently, with their own ideas and priorities but still wanting good value for money. That's what Issa offers; a personal, individual service with advice and support; car hire, guided tours, reservations, hotels, cultural explanations, across the whole of Jordan!

What follows are comments and feedback sent to us spontaneously. Anyone staying in our Dead Sea apartment meets Issa; he takes them to the apartment, settles them in, answers all their questions and solves their problems.

A far bigger attraction than Petra!

Seriously. Imagine if the Hijaz Railway was running a steam-engine service twice a week between Amman and Aqaba via Wadi Rum. This is not a pipe-dream. The trains could start within weeks!

The track is there anyway and used for occasional goods trains. There are six working steam locomotives and newly fitted out carriages, as well as the original that took King Abdullah I from Ma'an to Amman, at the birth of the state of Jordan. They are just sitting in the sidings at Marka, in NE Amman.

We have tried to jump start the railway into service. We don't seem to have the muscle!! Jordan's Hijaz Railway stays still and silent, despite its massive tourist potential and incredible history.

An oasis of peace and calm

We are often asked if Jordan is safe for a holiday. To date my answer has always been a firm yes. I am not naive nor would I advise anyone to come who didn't feel it would be safe for them but for everybody else Jordan is a great place to visit.

Circumstances change but within a fascinating region, Jordan does indeed remain the safest and most relaxing destination. So, if you want to visit the Middle East, if you want to spend time in an Arab country, if you want to enjoy a totally different culture within five or so flying hours of Western Europe, come to Jordan.

And don't just take my word for it. You can and should check with the British Foreign Office (FCO).
